According to a recent study by the American Journal of Psychiatry, “compared with the general population, individuals with a gender dysphoria diagnosis were about six times as likely to have had a mood and anxiety disorder health care visit, more than three times as likely to have received prescriptions for antidepressants and six times as likely to be hospitalized after a suicidal attempt.”
The study did provide some good news: when people pursue either affirmative counseling, hormone replacement therapy and/or surgical options, their likelihood of needing treatment for severe mental illness declines in the years following their affirmative treatment of choice.
