Our 40th Anniversary!
An organization that started in 1983 as a grassroots service for people with HIV/AIDS has grown into a trusted provider of LGBTQIA+ services in a safe, affirming environment. In fact, Resource Center is one of the largest LGBTQIA+ community centers in the US1 and a primary HIV/ AIDS service organization in North Texas.
Today, we proudly offer a wide array of LGBTQIA+ affirming resources designed to improve health and wellness, strengthen families and communities, and provide transformative education and advocacy.
A Brief History of Resource Center
1983
Resource Center was formed under the original name of Foundation for Human Understanding by the leaders of the Dallas Gay Alliance.
Meanwhile, at the corner of Cedar Springs and Throckmorton, William “Bill” H. Nelson, Jr., Terry Tebedo, William Waybourn and Craig Spaulding opened Crossroads Market and started accepting food for HIV+ people. Their location eventually evolved into the original AIDS Resource Center

1985
With the AIDS virus quickly spreading, the Foundation for Human Understanding changed their name to AIDS Resource Center.

1988
The Nelson Tebedo Health Clinic, named for Bill Nelson and his partner Terry Tebedo, opened.

1989
Dale Wesley Biddy broke into Resource Center, stole some computer equipment, and lit the place on fire with two highway flares.
Resource Center relocated to the corner of Reagan and Brown, renaming the former Metropolitan Community Church after the Center’s first executive director, the John Thomas LGBT Community Center.

1998
Foundation for Human Understanding becomes Resource Center of Dallas, Inc.

2016
Opened new 20,000 square foot state-of-the-art Community Center located at Inwood and Cedar Springs. Renamed and opened the Harold Simmons Foundation Health Campus in the Reagan location.
2017

2022
Broke ground on Oak Lawn Price, our affordable senior housing community.
